Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka was founded on 1 March 1982 by merging five hospitals: the General Hospital “Braće dr. Sobol”, the General Hospital “Dr Zdravko Kučić”, the Children’s Hospital Kantrida, the Orthopaedic Hospital Kraljevica and the Clinical Hospital for Lung Diseases Ičići. Today, it is one of three clinical hospital centres in Croatia and the central hospital institution of this part of Croatia.
At the same time, the Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka is a teaching and scientific-research base of the School of Medicine of the University in Rijeka, consisting of 16 clinics, 5 clinical departments and 4 centres, which operate on three localities, with a total of 3029 employees. Our vision is to unite the Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka in one locality, which will significantly improve both the conditions for professional and scientific work and the conditions of staying in hospital for our patients. In December this year, in the framework of the educational campaign by the Ministry of Health, entitled “For Health. Today.”, organized by the Croatian Institute of Public Health, we started with educational and informational activities of promoting National Programmes for Early Detection of Breast Cancer, Cervical Cancer and Colorectal Cancer, with the goal of increasing the response to preventative examinations for early detection of cancer and promoting health in Croatia.
Within the Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka, there are the Clinic of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, Clinic of Dermatovenerology, Clinic of Paediatrics, Clinic of Gynaecology and Labour, Clinic of Infectious Diseases, Clinic of Internal Medicine, Clinic for Surgery, Clinic for Maxillofacial Surgery, Clinic for Neurosurgery, Clinic for Neurology, Clinic for Ophthalmology, Clinic for Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, Clinic for Psychiatry, Clinic for Dental Medicine, Clinic for Urology, Clinical Department for Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Department for Laboratory Diagnosis, Clinical Department for Nuclear Medicine, Clinical Department for Radiology, Clinical Department for Transfusion Medicine, Department for Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, Emergency Medicine Centre, Centre for Clinical, Health and Organizational Psychology, Centre of Operation Rooms and Sterilization for the locality Sušak, hospital farmacy, Clinic for Radiotherapy and Oncology, Unit for Ensuring and Developing the Quality of Health care, Centre for Medical Physics and Radiation Protection, Department for Palliative Medicine, Department for Clinical Cytology. The staff is composed of: 3461 employees, 444 physicians in 27 different specialties, 83 physicians from the School of Medicine in Rijeka, 1316 nurses, 26% of whom have a higher degree of education, 384 employees in other health care areas (pharmacists, medical engineers, physical therapists, psychologists, speech pathologists, special education therapists, biologists, physicists, pharmaceutical technicians, laboratory technicians), 108 residents. Spatial capacities are: 206,000 m2 of the overall surface, 84,000 m2 of useful surface of hospital buildings, 1191 beds, 60 beds in intensive care units, 28 beds in emergency medical service, 24 surgery rooms, 197 outpatient facilities. When it comes to the annual range of work, we have: 3 170 000 outpatient services, 681 000 outpatient examinations, 48 200 examinations in the ER, 45 289 hospitalizations, 400 000 sick days, 20 000 large surgeries,15 transplants, 20 explantations, 9 of which were multiorgan, 3307 labours, 2 300 intervention cardiology procedures, 1300 intervention gastroenterology procedures, 141 types of diagnostic examinations, 210 types of laboratory tests. Scientific-research work is composed of: 29 research projects, 71 clinical tests, 10 referential centres, 10 scientific novices.
