Representing the heart the Croatian Riviera, Opatija is a sophisticated destination with the longest tradition of tourism in Croatia. Tourism began and rapidly developed at the end of the 19th century due to its favourable geographical position (its warm beaches being the closest in Central Europe, situated 500 km from Milano, Vienna, and Munich), lush vegetation, and moderate climate. Built at the turn of the 19th century, it has preserved its harmony with nature until the present day. Its well-maintained public gardens, the 12-km-long seaside promenade (known as Lungomare), well-kept beaches and fountains provide a stunning backdrop to the villas and hotels that cater to over 8,000 guests. The contrast between the sea and mountains, lush green parks and the brilliant blue sea, old buildings and modern comforts, noisy entertainment venues and quiet resorts make Opatija and its surroundings an ideal all-year-round destination.
Improving the general conditions of stay for tourists, promoting Opatija's tourist offer, raising awareness of the importance of economic, social, and other effects of tourism, preserving and improving all aspects of the tourist offer.
During its beginnings as a tourist resort, Opatija was primarily a winter resort for the elite. Today this tradition is continued through a diversified health tourism and wellness offer in specially equipped wellness centres of Opatija's hotels, in Thalassotherapia (a specialised clinic for the treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of cardiovascular disease featuring the modern Thalasso Wellness Centre), and in a number of specialised dental, cosmetic surgery, and orthopaedic clinics.
