The faculty was founded in 1960 and since then it has been systematically active in Opatija as the only high-education institution for education in the area of tourism, catering and sustainable development in the Republic of Croatia, offering all forms of education on the level of under-graduate, graduate, post-graduate specialist and doctoral study. It was listed by the UNWTO among the 120 leading educational institutions in the world that contribute to the innovative development of tourism. Besides high education, the Faculty also offers various forms of lifelong learning programmes.
The scientific research and professional activities in the scientific area of social sciences, in the scientific area of economy, and related scientific disciplines is conducted in the country and through EU projects.
The Faculty traditionally organizes three scientific conferences, and since 1995 is has issued the indexed scientific journal “Tourism and Hospitality Management”. There are 23 full and 9 associate professors, 19 assistant professors and 35 associates participating in the educating process, including the accompanying administrative services. The Faculty I the winner of many prizes and awards (SECAM international, Anton Štifanić, AHLEI …), and it is in the process of obtaining the quality certificate.

The Faculty has founded a post-graduate interdisciplinary specialist study HEALTH TOURISM, which is carried out in cooperation with the School of Medicine and Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University in Rijeka, supported by the Referential Centre for Health Tourism and Medically Programmed Holiday of the Croatian Ministry of Health and Thalassotherapia Opatija.
